The Gender Gap In Self-Promotion

New research from The National Bureau of Economic Research examined whether there was a difference in how men and women rated their performance. Through a series of experiments, the researchers found that women tend to rate their performance lower than men do. Interestingly, the researchers found this tendency remained even with interventions such as providing the average rating of others. Because many people’s career progress relies on self-promotion, this research may account for the continued gap in the labor market particularly in leadership roles. This is an important piece of research for those of you working with women, such as coaches, as well as for managers who conduct performance appraisals and hire staff.
